Theme 1 : to become a seamless one

Two different vehicles becoming one.

One electric generously sized urban cruiser and the other compact and agile petrol powered segway.

It didn't go through my own decision making process as it was too plain and didn't solve the critical problem of congestion.

and it was considered to be more interesting to show two Very different vehicles like male and female are.

But part of the features and general proportion remained at the end, which was found after the end of project, which is interesting.

Aston Martin Cygnet - 77

The raked windscreen may not be so feasible but who cares, it's fun to do so.
By the way the Cygnet, though some argue that it's pointless, when I sat on the cockpit in Geneva Autoshow, it made much sense to me. If occupied by two it gave you much more legroom and sense of freedom with luxe feel in black red leather trim.

For my new born baby reminded me of doing a baby car. I did it. Welcome to earth my boy.

Yogurt Porsche 928 2020

A tribute to my mother in law who is now here in London to help us for the soon-coming second baby of ours for whose daily Greek yogurt with M&S dried & fresh fruit with much love happened to inspire me with the memory of early 90s 928 Porsche, the oddball, I loved gazing at while skimming through the Porsche brochures a friend of my father's would bring us.

Final design direction. I wanted to have a side profile reflecting the real airflow, not the manipulated wrinkles. I wanted to create a side view that was never seen before yet beautiful. So this is it. It's from the observation of turbulence that air creates, the core of the power, the center of attention and focus on mundane car designs in town. So be a new Bentley.

All of a sudden I wanted to make the surfaces much simpler and smooth. I still wanted to keep the visual playfulness of incense theme. So I made exoskeleton frame with layered surfaces and covered it with transparent skin. I finally dumped this idea because it looked too ordinary in the end.

And I went on experimenting on a radical new idea of having the original side view with raked front end. Then, it looked too futuristic maybe odd to be a Bentley in near future.

So I came back to tweaking the surfaces in many different ways, struggling to find the right balance between the mysterious and precious feel and Bentley's elegance.

It was a very rough modeling. Still I can tell the boldness I wanted to keep till the end on the frontend is already visible here.
I tried a different idea of transparent middle body to give it a more mysterious look at night - as if the incense smoke is floating. But it became obvious it was too odd not to have the waist line. I added middle volume to the car which enhances aerodynamics as well.

Bentley Incense GT Phase 1 : Design Sketch

Although by the incense theme the surface is getting quite busy with relatively round crisps, I wanted the overall volume and some other graphic elements to remind Bentley's heritage. It should be elegant and gracious in volume - thus, the radius of the rear end edge is relatively big to accommodate gradient and voluminous highlight on it. While rear light looks quite modern and thin in contrast to the depth of rear end, behind it is a Bentley's typical grille that boasts its luxury gene.

Incense is the inspiration for this project. Incense was used as a present for kings in the past, nowadays it's used in luxurious spas or in religious rituals. Its airborne nature makes it light as air, its valuable particles makes it precious, the air it makes is mysterious, which will be a good metaphor for future aerodynamic Bentley.

British Coach Builder Bursary Competition Entry - TULOB

It was literally a 2-day project. Ofcourse we were given much more time, but at the end of all other projects I found I had 2 days left. It was A rush. But I like the result.

The main thing is the efficiency of a bird. It's efficient because it's light. Its sporting performance is powerful because it's light. Its power reception is uncomparably outstanding for when its feathers spread, its solar.wind power reception gets 10 times bigger. Its climate is naturally controlled by the feather(flex-extraporous fibre), so you don't need aircon units.
The 3-seater layout and the center bike-riding position of the driver makes the other two want to drive this machine. The control is very intuitive, you don't need a steering wheel anymore. Your control is directly connected to each front wheel in a way more like maneuvering your stick than a steering wheel.

By the way, TULOB stands for The Unbearable Lightness Of Being.

I was invited to the 2009 Interior Motives Award ceremony held at Cocoon Club in Frankfurt this September during the IAA season. My entry, Urbaviva was shortlisted for three categories - Best Safety Innovation, Best Lifestyle Interior and Best Eco Design.

This is a teaser film for the RCA 09 graduates for the graduation show 09 held back in July.
We, then first year Automark(one of the three pathways in RCA VD) created this film for our senior students. It was a lot of fun working together as a group, doing something different from vehicle design just for our graduating colleagues - Andrea, Jinsung, Jonathon, Magdalena, and Ralph.

Every meeting was started with a prayer so we can truly bless them. It wouldn't have been possible, because it wasn't a mandatory project! Who would want to do it?!
I directed the film, coordinated the schedule and staff, Sammy was the camera and art director, Johnny was the editing director, Bora art works, Il illustrations. Thanks Automark.

Even thought it's tough time now, we wish you guys the Best!

RCA-Ford interdisciplinary project

Reviving Ghia as a contemporary premium brand.
Main focus was on the brand value and vehicle interior based on outgoing S-max.

This project was an inter-disciplinary project where students from Innovation Design Engineering, Textile Design and Vehicle Design participated. So this was not a typical school VD project, but one more likely to happen in the reality. I really enjoyed working together with fascinating guys from IDE and Textile. Special thanks indeed to Matthew, Antonio, Maximo and Adam. Hopefully I will put some other materials we did together. For now I will upload my sketches.

I really like current generations of Audis, not the new clean-cut ones those are coming soon on the market. I think they have more attitudes and look clean, but they lack graceful forms Audis would have. I started from round-round Audis to create a performance version of Allroad Quattro.

Allroad Quattro just like RS6 best represents performance and functionality. Truly a beast undercover.

Audi TTS concept sketch - ongoing proj

A personal sketch project for Audi.
Design a more powerful and performance-oriented version of Audi TT.

In this iteration sketch, I wanted to keep the overall proportion and clean surfaces of the original car. I also tried to keep its face loyal to the current version, which I think is very metro-handsome appealing to both male and female customers.

But then, I thought it would be more interesting if I go further develop its form language to represent its more powerful performance. I created a language for S versions of Audi.

Car below tells us more power and dynamics. I will try to keep the balance and stance. Let's see how it evolves...

Vodatube

It was a 2 weeks competition for Vodafone within RCA Vehicle Design department, where we were suggested to deliver a transportation concept that can provide valuable experience to users using Vodafone's telecommunication technology, aiming the year 2015.

The concept is to make 'tube' metro system a fun exciting daily experience by simply refurbishing the interior layout for encouraging interactions among the passengers and giving valuable information, otherwise a very stressful and highly individual space.

Hello everyone,
Here are some snapshots from my first solo exhibition held this August in Seoul before I came to London for RCA.

I wanted to make a punkt to my undergrad - independent car studies - experience before studying at RCA, which shamelessly reflects rather naive use of inspirations which I still love very much. Having faced a transition from an industrial design undergrad to a vehicle design grad, I tried to talk about my design philosophy that just started being formed with people I knew, not only designers but also marketers, teachers, engineers, consultants, doctors, artists, musicians, Koreans, Americans, French, religious/nonreligious people and passersby.

For its name sake, [gotinspired] is all about how I got inspirations and translated them into a design.
I exhibited two recent projects I liked the most, one very short independent form study, and the graduation project for my undergrad school.

[gotinspired], inspiration and its translation will be one of the biggest topics of my journey as a designer.

[Gotinspired] Mercedes-Benz Alpenrose

A self-initiated project sponsored by Korea Institute of Design Promotion.
I wanted to do a pure form study project for Mercedes-Benz(no professional relation with them, though) after my short inspirational Euro-trip this summer, which inculdes a visit to Mercedes-Benz Museum in Stuttgart. A result of mingling three different sources of inspiration, F-35 fighter jet, Alpine Sunset Rose (Alpenrose), and Mercedes-Benz Motor sport Silverarrow,
this was a very short one-month project which took me 2 weeks to develop ideas and sketches, 2 weeks to model in Alias, 1 week to realize in NC-milled form.

Concept RibCage for 2030

My graduation project for Industrial Design department of Korea Advanced Institute of Science and Technology. This project got First Prize for ID KAIST Graduation Exhibition 2007, was exhibited at 2007 Business Of Design Week Hongkong.
This is a small vehicle for the year 2030, when congestion and pollution reach the highest ever. People are forcefully recommended to use small cars but their dull looks give people enough reasons to avoid them. Furthermore, their vulnerability to crash and feeling of insecurity are no help either.
Concept Ribcage 2030 is a car that provides the driver with a very exciting driving experience thanks to its agressive styling, openness and low driving position. Its inhaling/exhaling function makes the vehicle safer than upper classes, for the vehicle constantly supplies downforce using the center air tunnel while driving and it protects the driver by enlarging its size with immobilized structure and wrap-around air bag jellos(green parts).

SolO
stands for Solar energy,
stands for its O shape,
stands for its Solo-driving form.

SolO is a new type of public transport used for short distances travels in a cosmopolitan area. It is designated to be riden to where other types of public transport can't access due to their massive features. You can pick it up at a busy junction or tube/bus station using your travel card and pay according to the distance you traveled. Friendly shape inspired by doughnut, smart functions and ease of use makes it a friendly daily individual transport for urban commuters.

It was a team project with our infamous engineer guy Daeyong Cho, and we built a working prototype from welding the frame to electricity circuit works, that sadly didn't work for too long. But it was an awesome experience. We are still looking for sponsors to build the real product. Anyone out there?

Concept WL, Michelin Challenge Design

My first official car project. It was a totally independent project as I initiated it when I was in Yongsan Garrison U.S. Army base serving as a SGT, Korean Augmentation Troops to the U.S. Army.
I participated in Michelin Challenge Design 2007, got Outstanding Design Award, finished military service and went back to school, made a model and presented it to 2007 North American International Auto Show.

It is very significant to me - thanks to this event, my professors and senior students stopped discouraging me drawing cars, yay~
(My undergrad department was totally a research oriented industrial design college in an engineering school. It is a very good design school though. ID KAIST.)
